Tallon Adds Touch to Tamarack

There will be some hikes in greens fees at Chicago golf coursesthis season, most notably boosts to $95 at Kemper Lakes and $75 atCog Hill-Dubsdread - two of the area's premier public courses.

But one course is lowering its rates, and has hired a celebrityhead golf professional as well.

LinksCorp, a national golf management company based inNorthfield, acquired the Tamarack course in Naperville over thewinter and named Dale Tallon - the Blackhawks' radio-TV commentator -as its head professional.

Greens fees have been reduced 17 to 35 percent from last year. They now range from $25 to $45, including half a riding cart.

Tamarack is the first Chicago course operated by LinksCorp, founded by ex-Kemper Sports Management staff member Ben Blake. Inaddition to Tallon, Blake named Walt Wynarczyk as Tamarack's generalmanager and director of golf.

Wynarczyk had been head professional and superintendent atThunderbird in Barrington after assistant professional stints atTurnberry and Inverness.

Tallon, 42, will be in his first head golf pro position and willcontinue to work in hockey. He played in the National Hockey Leaguefor 10 seasons, five with the Blackhawks, and has announced Hawksgames since 1982.

"I'm still going to do the hockey broadcasts, but this positionat Tamarack will also be a full-time thing," said Tallon. "The twoare a nice marriage. It will help get Tamarack's name out in public.

"This is a good facility right now, and we're going to make ita great one. It's priced properly and for the money, golfers willhave a nice experience."

Tallon is no newcomer to golf. He has been an assistant prosince 1973, the last five years at Crystal Woods in Woodstock. Healso won the Illinois PGA Assistants Championship and finished thirdin the 1991 Illinois Open, and has been a member of the Canadian PGATour.

Tamarack received its most attention last summer when it hostedthe qualifying round for the Senior PGA Tour's Ameritech Senior Openat nearby Stonebridge.
