NSW: South Coast man barricaded in house

SYDNEY, Aug 3 AAP - A man with a knife has barricaded himself alone inside a house at
Narooma on the New South Wales far south coast.

Several homes in the area had been evacuated and police had surrounded the property in
Angle Street, local police said.

A domestic dispute had lead to the siege which began at 8.45am in the man' own home,
Narooma police Inspector Dave Swilks said.

"He has no hostages but is very agitated and threatening to harm himself," he said.

The house is surrounded by 22 police officers, and police negotiators were talking to the
man, Insp Swilks said.

"He has made no demands apart from the asking that police go away," he said.

Insp Swilks said the man was a local identity well known in the community, but he had no
criminal history.

Police have evacuated about five homes in the vicinity and cordoned off the street to
traffic and people are being diverted away from the corner shops.

"It's just a waiting game now. He is posing no threat to anyone other than himself,"
Inspector Swilks said.
