SELF-DEFENSE CLAIMED AS ALBANY MURDER TRIAL STARTS.(Local)

Testimony opened Tuesday in the murder trial of a 29-year-old city man who is claiming self defense in what authorities are calling the savage bludgeoning of another man over a bad drug deal.

Facing two counts of second-degree murder is John Henry Patterson Jr., who has been in the Albany County Jail since his arrest the day following the July 1, 1988 slaying of Roland Maye, 40, of 39 Brady Ave., Albany.

In an apparent fight over a drug deal, Maye cut Patterson over the eye with a knife, and Patterson allegedly retaliated by striking Maye repeatedly with a metal rod, used to reinforce concrete, about midnight …
