NSW: Govt seeks to recover $3m it overpaid teachers

SYDNEY, Dec 15 AAP - The New South Wales Government is seeking to recover an estimated
$3 million it accidentally overpaid the state's teachers last year.

The NSW Audit Office, which revealed the mistake in its annual report this week, said
the overpayment of salaries to teachers and casual staff was a major concern.

In one case, a teacher received $78,000 while on leave without pay for two years.

The teacher agreed in October to repay the Education Department but had so far failed to do so.

An audit office spokesman said the department had established a taskforce to recover
the total overpayments to teachers.

He said most of the overpayments occurred when teachers were given leave payments after
having resigned and received all entitlements.
