NSW: Wages uncertainty leaves bosses facing fines
Large numbers of employers could face large fines for underpaying their workers ..
because the wages watchdog won't tell them what they are legally obliged to pay.
The Work Choices legislation has created thousands of new Australian Pay and Classification
Scales .. which set minimum wage entitlements.
But Fairfax newspapers report no government agency is publishing legally reliable copies of them.
It means an estimated two million workers cannot be sure they are being paid properly
.. while their employers don't have a definitive guideline explaining their legal obligations.
Several employer organisations have raised the issue in their submissions to the Fair
Pay Commission for its minimum wage review .. which started this month.
Industry groups are calculating the rates for their members .. but can't guarantee
they would stand up in court in a dispute.
Business groups say the fines under Work Choices are more than 30 thousand dollars
for each breach.
