NSW: Man dead after saving sister and friend from surf
SYDNEY, April 12 AAP - A man has died trying to save his younger sister and her friend
in rough surf on the NSW far north coast.
The 35-year-old man rushed to the aid of the two 14-year-old girls when they got caught
in a rip on New Brighton Beach, just north of Byron Bay, at about 2pm (AEST) on Sunday.
"One of the 14-year-old girls entered the surf and encountered some difficulties and
she signalled to a friend who also entered the surf to assist," Superintendent Darren
Steel told the Nine Network.
The man managed to pull the pair to the safety of a sandbar, but he was dragged under by the rip.
Passers-by pulled the unconscious man from the water and two nurses conducted resuscitation
until paramedics arrived at the beach.
He died at the scene.
His sister was rushed to Tweed Heads Hospital, where she remains in a stable condition.
It's believed the family were from the New Brighton area, the Nine Network said.
